Memorial Hermann to lay off 83, close longtime Houston nursing facility

Memorial Hermann Health System will lay off over 80 employees and close a longtime nursing facility by September.

HOUSTON — Memorial Hermann Health System is laying off over 80 workers and closing a nursing facility that has been open since the 1980s.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter obtained by the Houston Business Journal, the 83 employees are estimated to be terminated by Sept. 1, when the University Place Skilled Nursing Facility at 7480 Beechnut St. will close.

The facility is adjacent to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital off the Southwest Freeway.

Workers do not have bumping rights, and there are no employee representatives, the letter said. Affected employees are encouraged to apply to other Memorial Hermann jobs. In a statement provided to the HBJ, Memorial Hermann said employees would be supported with on-site and virtual career events as well as help with job searches, resume writing, interviewing skills and up-skilling.
