Many shoppers love Aldi for its low-priced groceries, especially on its house brands. But now, a competitor is suing the store, claiming some of those house brands look too much like the original.
A report in ConsumerWorld said the maker of Oreos and some other brands, Mondelez, is not a fan. Mondelez has filed a lawsuit against Aldi in U.S. District Court, claiming Aldi “blatantly copies the distinctive and iconic elements” of the Oreo trademark, specifically the blue package with white lettering and an Oreo-looking cookie.
Mondelez wants Aldi to change the packaging. Aldi is also accused of copying several other Mondelez packages, including Wheat Thins, which Aldi calls Thin Wheat, and Nutter Butter cookies, which Aldi calls Peanut Butter Cream.
Aldi has not commented on the lawsuit, but savvy shoppers may have noticed that other stores have house brands that also look like name brands.
So, are shoppers really fooled into thinking they are getting the real thing? Many Aldi shoppers know they are getting Aldi’s house brand when they get those big savings.
A judge will ultimately decide if Aldi has to change some of its packaging. Until then, enjoy the savings.
