HOUSTON — Five people were rescued from a burning apartment complex on the Fourth of July after the Houston Fire Department said an assault call turned into arson.
HFD Deputy Chief Bryan Sky-Eagle said the fire broke out at an apartment complex on Dunlap Street just north of Bellaire Boulevard around 10 p.m.
He said the firefighters were initially responding to an assault call, but noticed all three floors of an apartment building were on fire when they got to the scene.
Firefighters quickly jumped into action, pulling four people from the burning building. Sky-Eagle said a fifth person had jumped from a balcony.
He said a 13-year-old girl and her mother were taken to Texas Children’s Hospital with burns. The person who jumped from a balcony was taken to a hospital for their injuries. The arson suspect was also taken to a hospital with what Sky-Eagle called bad burns.
After rescuing the people from the building, HFD said firefighters knocked down the fire quickly. Sky-Eagle said there were delays setting up a water supply because Bellaire Boulevard is a busy street.
We don’t yet know what led up to the fire.
