2-year-old found dead in retention pond near Balzano Court

A missing toddler was found unresponsive in a Katy-area retention pond and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A tragic discovery was made late Tuesday night after a missing toddler was found unresponsive in a Katy-area retention pond.

According to Det. Jesse Arenivas with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 10:05 p.m. to reports of a missing 2-year-old child on Balzano Court. After searching the area, deputies located the child in a nearby retention pond, where the child was found unresponsive.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

When asked about the circumstances surrounding the child’s death, Arenivas said investigators do not yet know how the child ended up in the pond. The investigation remains ongoing.

“We’re still in the process of interviewing the parents, and they’re still under investigation,” Arenivas said.

Authorities believe other people in the area, not deputies, may have been the first to find the child in the pond, but that detail has not yet been confirmed.

No further information about the child’s identity or how long the child was missing before being found has been released.
