He’s the second suspect charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Keisha Warran, 37, and the wounding of her friend on May 6. It happened in a strip center parking lot on Long Point Road near Woodvine.
We learned more about what led to the deadly shooting at Benjamin’s first court appearance.
Prosecutors said the victims had gone to an apartment to sell drugs to Benjamin’s aunt. The man said the aunt was acting “erratically,” so he and Warren left without selling her drugs.
According to prosecutors, Benjamin, co-defendant Rodney Johnson, the aunt and her daughter piled into a car and drove about half a mile down the street.
“You and Mr. Johnson are both seen on video getting out of the car and crossing the street to where Mr. Tyson and Miss Warren were standing in the middle of a bunch of other people,” the magistrate said in court. “And either you or both of you opened fire, striking Mr. Tyson and killing Miss Warren.”
Warren died at the scene. The man, who had multiple gunshot wounds to the stomach, made it to a nearby locksmith shop.
He then set Benjamin’s bond at $500,000 for the murder charge and $250,000 for aggravated assault.
The defense attorney had asked for a $5,000 bond, saying Benjamin has no criminal history, has a job and lives with his grandmother.
Johnson, 23, was arrested earlier this month.
It’s not clear if the women in the car on the night of the shooting will face charges.
Police have arrested and charged a suspect in the fatal shooting of a man and wounding of a man on Long Point Road on May 6.
Rodney Johnson, 23, was arrested on June 3. He’s charged with murder.
The woman he’s accused of killing has been identified as Keisha Warren, 37.
A woman was killed and a man was seriously injured in a pair of shootings that occurred late Tuesday night in the same northwest Houston neighborhood, according to police.
Houston police said they were initially called to a scene near Woodvine and Long Point around 11 p.m. for a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they found a woman in her 30s shot to death at the location.
While investigating that scene, police said they received a second report of a shooting just two blocks away. A man in his early 40s had been shot several times in the stomach and was found at a locksmith business, investigators said.
According to HPD Lt. Wilkens, the man had left the original shooting location and made his way down to Johanna Drive, where he got help from a nearby store clerk.
“We have another individual, male in his early 40s, left this location and made it all the way down to Johanna — I think that’s the road down there — and actually got help from a store clerk down there,” Wilkens said.
The man was taken to a hospital, but his condition has not been released.
Police have not identified any suspects, and details about what led up to the shootings have not been confirmed.
Authorities said they are continuing to speak with witnesses and will provide more information as the investigation unfolds.
