A deadly crash in southwest Houston has killed two people after a vehicle slammed into a tree and caught fire.
HOUSTON — A deadly overnight crash in southwest Houston has left two people dead, according to police.
The crash happened early Friday morning along Wilcrest Drive, where investigators say a vehicle traveling northbound left the roadway and slammed into a tree. The impact triggered a fire, and police say most of the damage was caused by that initial collision.
The vehicle came to rest in the southbound lanes of Wilcrest, where it was then hit by a second car. Police said the two people inside the second vehicle were not hurt.
At this time, police have not released the identities of the two people killed. Investigators say the victims were not recognizable at the scene.
“I can’t even recognize who they are,” an officer said. “So at this point, we’re unsure [of the] sex [or] age of the two occupants.”
Houston police believe speed played a major role in the crash, but said it’s still unclear if other factors were involved.
This is a developing story. KHOU 11 will provide updates as more information becomes available from investigators.
