2 found dead at remote campground in Isle Royale National Park

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities are investigating after two unidentified campers were found dead in a remote campground in Isle Royale National Park.

Around 4 p.m. Sunday, park rangers received two separate reports of two people found dead at a backcountry campground within the park, according to the National Park Service.

A pair of park rangers had to hike 11 miles overnight to reach the campground, the NPS said.

Upon arriving at the park early Monday morning, the rangers were able to confirm the reports.

The two campers have not been identified, according to the NPS, and officials have not released any information about them. It’s not clear what caused their deaths.

Isle Royale is one of the most remote and least visited national parks in the country.

The giant island sits in Lake Superior, approximately 55 miles northwest of Copper Harbor at the northern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. It is only accessible by ferry or seaplane.

Few deaths have been reported in Isle Royale. In 2013, a man died while scuba diving, and in 2019, another man died after experiencing a medical emergency while hiking, data shared with Nexstar shows.

WOOD’s Matt Jaworowski and Nexstar’s Addy Bink contributed to this report.
