The bologna was sold under a variety of brand names and may have been carved up in stores, making identification of affected products especially difficult.
WASHINGTON — More than 143,000 pounds of bologna has been recalled because the products contain undeclared types of meat, federal regulators said.
Gaiser’s European Style Provisions Inc., a New Jersey-based food manufacturer, is recalling 143,416 pounds of ready-to-eat bologna after federal officials discovered multiple products contained undeclared types of meat, including pork, beef and chicken.
The recall, announced Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), affects items produced between March 20 and June 20, 2025. The issue was uncovered following a complaint submitted to the USDA Office of Inspector General’s hotline.
The ready-to-eat products were sold under a variety of brand names and labeling formats, with meat or poultry components that were not listed among the ingredients. Affected products include:
-
“Family Tree Bologna Veal” — contains undeclared pork
-
“Babushka’s Recipe Chicken Bologna” — contains undeclared pork
-
“Fancy Bologna” — labeled with pork, but contains undeclared beef and chicken
-
“Gaiser’s Russian Brand Doktorskaya Bologna” — contains undeclared beef
-
“Gaiser’s Bologna Veal” — contains undeclared chicken and pork
-
“Gaiser’s Turkey Bologna” — contains undeclared chicken and pork
-
“Chicken Bologna Kypoyka PABA” — contains undeclared pork
All recalled products bear the establishment number “EST. 5385” inside the USDA mark of inspection and were shipped to wholesale and retail locations nationwide. In some cases, the bologna may have been repackaged, weighed, and labeled at the store level, which could make identification more difficult for consumers.
While the FSIS has not received any reports of illness related to the mislabeling, the agency urges consumers not to eat the products if they have any on hand.
The recall is classified as Class III, meaning the health risk is considered low for consumers. However, individuals with dietary restrictions, religious concerns, or food allergies related to specific meats could be affected.
Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators and freezers, and discard the products or return them to the place of purchase. Restaurants and food service providers are also urged not to serve the recalled bologna.
