The shooting happened on July 4 just after midnight at a home on Gianna Springs Court near Atascocita Road.

Deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and Precinct 4 responded to the scene and found the teen with a gunshot wound to the torso. He was pronounced dead.

Sheriff Gonzalez said the 13-year-old boy was playing with a rifle when it unintentionally discharged, hitting and killing the 14-year-old. A 17-year-old sister was also there at the time.

The 13-year-old was arrested and is facing a manslaughter charge.

It’s still unclear how the children got hold of the rifle or whether any adults could face charges. The investigation is ongoing.
