ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas – A tragic incident involving multiple vehicles resulted in the death of a 10-year-old child in Atascosa County, as reported by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The accident occurred around 12:45 p.m. on Thursday along State Highway 16, just south of Encino Drive.
According to DPS, a Jeep Compass was following a semi-trailer truck in a southbound direction on the highway.
Preliminary investigations from DPS indicate that as the semi-trailer truck attempted to make a right turn, it was rear-ended by the Jeep Compass.
Sadly, the 10-year-old passenger in the Jeep Compass was declared dead at the scene, while the driver was airlifted to a San Antonio hospital for medical care.
DPS reported that the driver of the semi-trailer truck was uninjured.
Following the collision, State Highway 16 was temporarily closed but reopened within an hour, according to DPS.
