A man is dead and a woman is critically injured after being hit twice by vehicles while cycling in north Harris County.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — One man is dead and a woman is in critical condition after both were hit twice by vehicles while riding a bicycle late Tuesday night in north Harris County.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicle Crimes Division, the crash happened around 10:50 p.m. on Veterans Memorial Drive near Fallbrook Drive. Deputies responded after 911 calls reported a vehicle vs. bicycle crash.
When first responders arrived, they found a man and a woman lying in the street with serious injuries. Both were rushed to the hospital. Deputies said the man was later pronounced dead, while the woman was taken into surgery and remains in critical condition.
Investigators said the first vehicle that struck the couple returned to the scene, and the driver cooperated with deputies. They added that there were no signs of intoxication and she was cooperative with the investigation.
However, while the victims were down in the roadway, a second vehicle came through and hit them again. That driver did not stop and fled the scene. Authorities said they don’t yet know the make or model of that vehicle.
Deputies said the victims appeared to be adults between 30 and 40 years old. Preliminary findings suggest the bicycle may not have had safety lights, and neither victim appeared to be wearing a helmet at the time. The investigation is ongoing as deputies work to confirm those details and locate the hit-and-run driver.
